Future of freeloaders tax to be decided in Parliament today

MPs will vote on decree #3 today. According to the Constitution, the President’s decrees are temporary and must be approved by MPs. MPs study the text of the decree and then send it to the House of Representatives. If they do not to approve the decree, it will have to be reworked. Moreover, MPs do not have the right to change the President’s decrees themselves.

The decree is better known as the freeloaders tax and it was signed by the state leader on April 2. According to it, unemployed citizens will have to pay the fine of 20 base amounts a year.

The document has been criticized by economists and human rights defenders a lot. The Belarusian Helsinki Committee lawyers have found about a dozen cases of violation of the Constitution, national legislation and international agreements in it.
