EU, UNDP diplomats join students to clean up litter near Minsk

The local area is unique due its biological diversity. Over 40 black storkes and other rare animals in the Red Book habitate there. There are many lakes and they are located close to Minsk so tourists left behind a lot of litter. Therefore, on the Global Earth Day, the UNDP Office and the Delegation of the European Commission made the clean-up together with the students from the local secondary school in the framework of the project that aims to protect enfironment and promote sustainable development in Belarus.

UNDP was represented by deputy head of mission Farid Karakhanov and European Commission's delegation was represented by Janis Aizsalnieks, an attche. The government was represented by Veronika Varavka, the head of the press office at the Ministry of Natural Resources of Belarus.

There were mainly plastic bottles.

Toursists are the main litterers. Organizers hope their action will change people.

Over 100 kg of litter was collected.
