The Economist: Belarus facing high risk of social unrest

According to the survey, Belarus is in the group of countries facing a high risk of social unrest in 2014.

Besides our country, the following states are in the same group: Albania, Algeria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Sri Lanka and Spain.

"Decreasing income and a high unemployment rate are not always accompanied by unrest,” the authors note. “However, if some other impressive elements are coupled with economic problems, there may be a high risk of instability. The factors include huge social disparity, low level of special protection, ethnic unrest and previous disorders. The erosion of trust to the government and governmental institutions is very important.”

The authors of the article noted that the forecasts should not be considered faultless, BelaPAN reports.
