Death of Lithuanian officer in Brest considered murder

Lithuanian prosecutors are investigating the death of an officer of security agencies Vitautas Patiunas for the third time. He died in Brest in the summer of 2006. They think the Lithuanian was probably killed. Radio “Liberty” informs that the case was changed in February 2010 and is being investigated as a murder now. The police used to think that Patiunas died due to his own imprudence. Lawyers doubt that it will be possible to find the murderers four years after the incident.

According to unofficial sources, prosecutors started considering it a murder after they had received new information. However, they do not specify what kind of information it was.

The Lithuanian press noted that one of the reasons for the murder could be the fact that he was probably interested in corrupt connections of Lithuanian businessmen and politicians, obscure  energy projects and the disappearance of the money meant for the Belarusian opposition.
