Council of Europe urges Minsk to free all political prisoners

The Council of Europe's Conference of International NGOs has called on Belarus to release all the political prisoners.  It is also concerned with the deterioration of the human rights situation in early 2008. A special resolution was passed at the meeting in Strasbourg.

The resolution notes that up to 50 protesters were detained and hundreds of people were beaten ruthlessly in the past two weeks in Belarus.

The conference has called on Minsk to stop repressions, to remove the participation in unregistered organization from the Penal Code, to allow an unhindered operation of the non-state media and to create conditions for free and fair elections, reports Radio Svaboda.
