Blood donors in Belarus to begin indefinite strike

Blood donors take a decision to begin an indefinite strike. “It will start on July 1 if the authorities do not come in contact with us during the preliminary warning strike," Belapan quoted Igar Kavalenka, the honorable donor of Belarus and a protest organizer, as saying.

Blood donors are on what they called a warning strike from June 20 through June 27. Yet they continue visiting the blood transfusion stations.

The action aims to express protest against the abolition of benefits for honorable donors under the new law on benefits which will come into force on December 17, 2007. Under the new law, blood donors are deprived of benefits associated with dentist services, recreation, 50% reduction in costs for medicines and 40% bonuses to the pension.

The protest actions are taking place in the Minsk,  Mahiliou, Homel and Brest regions. According to Mr Kavalenka, action participants in Mahiliou were today disseminating leaflets near the local blood transfusion station.

“We tell people that they are deprived of vital benfits," he explained.
