Belarus remains silent over Abkhazia, South Ossetia independence

No nation has supported yet Russia's decision to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The official Minsk also remains silent, although Moscow expects its ally to voice support. Only several members of the House of Representatives, including Siarhei Haidukevich, said the words of support to the independence of self-declared republics on the Russian television channels. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus is convinced that Alexander Lukashenka has no way out of this situation:

"Not supporting would mean crossing everything what we have... Russia has raised itself from the knees and will pull many. Nothing can be done about it".

When asked why the official Minsk is taking a pause, Haidukevich explained as follows:

"It is not required today or tomorrow... The process has just started. Why do we need to run ahead of the wholw planet? We should behave with respect...".

Siarhei Haidukevich believes that the Belarusian authorities are taking into account the multi-vector foreign policy of this country and the views of "European colleagues" when discussing decisions on South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
