Belarus to confiscate cars from drunk Russian and Ukrainian drivers (video)

The draft law "On amendments and additions to some codes of the Republic of Belarus relating to the strengthening of responsibility for driving a vehicle under influence of alcohol" was passed in two readins at a time by the members of the lower house of the parliament, the House of Representatives last week.

The new amendments allow the traffic police to confiscate a private vehicle for drunk driving committed for the second time in the course of a year. Confiscation will not apply to the cases when the vehicle gets into possession of the offender through theft, violance, etc.

Fines for drunk driving will increase from the current Br1.5 million - 3 million to Br5-10 million.

The drunk driver faces from six months to seven years in prison if his or her driving led to heavy injuries or human death. If the drunk driver is to blame for the death of two or more people, he or she faces from four to ten years in prison.

The amended law shall also apply to foreign citizens. Approved by the Council of the Republic, the bill is now to be signed by the president to come into force.
