Belarus central bank's chief says EU should not join US sanctions

Belarus's Ambassador in Lithuania Uladzimer Drazhyn has admitted that Belneftekhim's affiliate in Lithuania is affected by US sanctions, reports Nasha Niva newspaper. The ambassador said that four leading banks in Lithuania refused to service Belneftekhim's transactions, and Belarus had to approach a less reliable bank, reports Radio Svaboda.

In 2007, Belarus made $380 million through the Lithuanian representative office of Belneftekhim.

In the view of Pyotr Prakapovich, the chairman of the National Bank of Belarus, it was an expected situation, because "all the Baltic states do whatever they are told by the United States". The central bank's chief believes it is important that the European Union does not join US sanctions.
