A.Tankachova: We have appealed to Russian President and government in Georgia’s case

An international monitoring group working in Georgia has appealed to the Russian President and government. A Belarusian human rights activist Alena Tankachova is its member. According to her, the document was signed by representatives of human rights organizations of Belarus, Ukraine, Italy and Russia (the international Youth Movement and Moscow Helsinki group). Human rights activists have suggested that Russia should provide for the security of civilians and their property on the Georgian territory controlled by Russian military troops after having made trips to refugees’ camps in Georgia (there are about 120 thousand refugees living in horrible conditions). They have also asked to let representatives of the Georgian authorities and international organizations access the territory.

Alena Tankachova has given an interview to ERB and noted that human rights activist were not able to reach Hori yesterday – Russian soldiers blocked all the ways to the city:

"The Russian government must ensure the presence of international missions on the Georgian territory controlled by Russian troops. The fact that representatives of the OSCE, “The Red Cross” and the UN cannot reach there has created obstacles for preventing a humanitarian catastrophe evident in the territories at the moment".
