About two thousand people lay flowers on monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan

About two thousand people have taken part in the ceremony of laying flowers to the monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan. The requiem meeting took place in the Island of Tears in Minsk.


The event was dated for the 20th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan celebrated on February 15. Wreaths were sent by the government, Parliament, security agencies and governmental civil organizations.

Making a speech at the meeting, Minister of Defense Pyotr Maltsau noted that the Soviet Union had taken part in more than 30 wars after the World War II. The Afghan War was the most large-scale among them. More than 30 thousand Belarusians were engaged in it and more than 700 of them died.
