44 current MPs to run for parliamentary mandates

44 out the current 110 members of the House of Representatives have formally announced their intention to run for the next parliament, Lidzia Yarmoshyna, the chairperson of the Central Elections Commission, said in a statement Tuesday. The European Radio for Belarus explores who their main competitors are and what political techniques they are going to use.

Lawmaker Siarhei Kastsyan will run in the constituency No 43 in the Mozyr district. But he frankly confessed to the European Radio for Belarus that he does not have an election platform.

“I don’t have my own election platform. There is a program of the president which was approved by the All-Belarusian Congress. There is also a program of the Communist Party of Belarus of which I am a member. These two platforms are identical, because they aim at improving the well-being of the Belarusian people. Therefore, I support these two programs and will base my campaign on them”, he told the European Radio for Belarus.

From himself personally, Kastsian pledges to construct 87 km of the railway from the village of Rushkevichy to Mozyr, 15 km of tram rails from Mozyr to Naroulia, to build a stadium in the town of Elsk and to complete the construction of a brick factory in the Mozur district.

It is still unclear if he is able to put his election promises into reality, because he has two competitors. One of them represents the opposition United Civic Party, while the other one is the chairman of the Elsk district administration. Kastsian says that the local head of the administration will be his main competitor, because he enjoys a huge administrative resource which he does not feel ashamed to abuse.

Kastsian: “Yesterday, the director of Kamenka farm tore off the ID of a representative from my nomination group”.

Despite this, the politician is not going to use dirty political techniques in his struggle for the mandate.

“I have never criticized anyone and will not touch anyone this time either. I will be talking about myself only, about what I have done and what I am going to do for people”, Kastsian says.

Uladzimir Zdanovich will not promise to construct anything to the voters in Dneprbug constituency No 10. He says things can change while you are on your way from the village to the capital, and it will be difficult to keep his promises. In that case, he will feel embarrassed in front of his voters. So to avoid being embarrassed, he prefers to give general promises.

“My platform comes from my heart. This is to make sure that all of us are confident when we go to sleep that we will wake up in a peaceful country without any external or internal wars. Economy has to work even better so that salaries are raised ahead of prices, etc.”

The lawmaker has a full house of competitors: both from the opposition and pro-government.  But he says that he will not fight with competitors but for the votes of the electorate. As for any complications, a member of the opposition is likely to create them.

Zdanovich: “The most experienced fighters would often lose to newcomers. Therefore, I will treat every opponent with respect and seriousness”.

In a conversation with the European Radio for Belarus, MP Volha Abramova displayed confidence, calm and intrigue. In a surprised move, she said she was not yet interested in who would run against her during the elections.

“I have not actually inquired yet who and how many people will be running in my constituency. I am not interested in all this yet. This is unnecessary information”, she said.

But she promised surprises to her competitors, regardless if they are from the opposition or pro-government.

“I am both a politician and a spin doctor. Have you ever seen a spin doctor who reveals his techniques ahead of the election campaign? I am not going to give trumps to my competitors and opponents. I can only say that my campaign will not resemble my previous campaign”.

Volha Abramava describes her victory chances as huge. But if she loses, she will not feel disappointed. She says there are may employment opportunities apart from the parliament.
