16:45 Belarusian intelligentsia objects to Suvorov monument
The heads of several Belarusian NGOs have sent a letter to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church in Belarus, insisting that the Orthodox Church refuse from building a church memorial to Alexander Suvorov in Kobryn.
Ales Marackin, Ales Paskevic and Aleh Trusau reminded in the letter that the Russia's famous general is remembered in Belarus for executions and ruthless supression of the national uprisings.
"We are requesting you not to make unthought-out step when addressing this issue and not to play with emotions of ordinary believers," wrote the letter signed by the heads of the Union of Belarusian Dyaspora, the Union of Belarusian Writers and the Belarusian Language Society.
