15th anniversary of Lukashenka’s victory in 2nd round of presidential elections

Today is the 15th anniversary of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s victory in the 2nd tour of presidential elections. Let us remind you that the second tour of the first presidential elections in Belarus took place on July 10, 1994. A 39-year-old deputy of the Parliament, the head of the commission studying activities of commercial structures created by state organs, Alyaksandr Lukashenka scored 80.1% votes while the Prime Minister Vyachaslau Kebich scored only 14.1%.

Lukashenka’s inauguration took place on July 20, 1994.

The five-year presidency term was started anew after a republican referendum in 1996. Lukashenka won the elections in 2001 and organized one more referendum three years later. According to its results, the limitation of the number of presidential terms per person was removed from the Constitution. Alyaksandr Lukashenka was elected President of the state for the third time in 2006.
