Woman’s portrait to appear on new 10-dollar banknote

A woman’s portrait will appear on the new 10-dollar banknote. U.S. citizens will choose the person themselves, United States Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew announced on Wednesday.

Portraits on banknotes have changed only a few times since the introduction of dollars, the Secretary reminded. He is proud that the new 10-dollar banknotes will be the first ones to have a woman’s portrait on them.

The new money will be out in 2020 – the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the Constitution. It gave women the right to vote. Americans will choose ‘the heroine’ of the banknote themselves this year.

The current 10-dollar banknotes have the portrait of the first American United States Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton on them. He took the office in George Washington’s time of presidency, TASS reports.
