Will 5-star hotels be built especially for world hockey championship in Minsk?
The simultaneous construction of six prestigious hotels has started in Minsk. It will not solve the problem of the lack of hotels for foreign tourists. Five-sstr hotels seem to be necessary to get permission to host the world hockey championship in Belarus.
Let us remind you that the Belarusian hockey federation has sent another appeal for hosting the world championship. However, it is necessary to build up-to-date hotels in order to get the permission. There are no strong requirements about their number but participants, founders and members of international delegations will have to be given accommodation, says the press secretary of the Belarusian Hockey Federation Kanstantsyya Leshchanka in an interview with ERB:
“There are no exacting requirements about their number. There are minimal demands of the International Hockey Federation. There should be hotels for members of the international hockey federation, for representatives of the founder general, teams and judges. That’s it”.
According to the press secretary of the federation, the more hotels will be built the better. And it is quite natural that members of the International Hockey Federation and the founder general should get accommodation in five-star hotels:
“The more hotels there are, the more solid our reliable will be. Naturally, members of the International Hockey Federation and the founder general should live in five-star hotels”.
There will be 12 teams of participants, at least 30 people… There is only one five-star hotel in Minsk for all of them now – “Europe”. ERB phoned them in order to book rooms for a delegation of 10 people. The earliest date available for it was May 23. A four-star hotel “Victoria” also lacks rooms:
“We have a lot of guests. But every day we have to refuse 10 or 15 people. We cannot satisfy the demand”.
There are 196 rooms in “Victoria”. The administration are not afraid of any competition with luxurious hotels that may appear and do not think there will have any rivals in the near future:
“We are ready to win in any case of competition. We will see. It will not happen soon anyway”.
Interestingly, tourists do not want to visit Belarus even though new VIP-hotels are being built in Minsk… It is because of the lack of accommodation for tourists. An employee of a travel agency “Top-Tour” Kiryl says:
“There are not enough hotels for tourists. It is 2 or 3-star hotels. We practically do not have any 2-star hotels. There are hotels in a terrible condition having no stars at all or some private hotels that cannot provide many people with accommodation.
There are three-star hotels but they are not enough because the capital is becoming a popular place for organizing conferences, competitions, etc. That is why it is rather difficult to find a room if you did not book any in advance”.
According to Kiryl, the lack of hotels for tourists is one of the main problems to be solved in the first place:
“5-star and 4-star hotels are being built now… It is fine but I do not know how they are going to find enough customers…”
If we get permission to host the world championship in Belarus, all prestigious hotels will be occupied by participants. However, there are amateurs. Where should we accommodate them if we lack rooms even for ordinary tourists? I also wonder what investors will do with rooms that are likely to remain vacant after the championship is over...
