UN gives out grant to save bats in Brest fortress

Up to three thousand bats fly into an abandoned bastion at the Brest Fortress to wait out the winter colds. This place is officially dubbed as the Barbastella sanctuary, the bigget winter-sleep location for bats in Europe. Two years ago, vandals poured fuel and set the sleeping bats ablaze. Over 400 bats were killed by the fire.

After the attack, local scientists decided to install doors, window bars to protect bats. They filed a grant application to the UN Office in Minsk.

According to Maria Dziamjanchyk, an activist with the Fartherland's Birds Protection NGO, the grant was signed by a UN representative at the end of May. By June, all the funds were wired to the organization's account.

But the NGO has not been able to access the funds at the bank due to red tape…
