UN body: Belarus's human rights record deteriorated in 2006

The situation with the human rights in Belarus steadily deteriorated in the course of 2006, Adrian Severin, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Belarus told a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.  "All of my recommendations have been ignored by the Belarusian authorities", Severin noted. He said that the Belarus government continued harrassing the civil society and political opposition throughout the whole last year.

Adrian Severin proposed to extend his mandate of a special rapporteur. This, in the view of Severin, could become a sign of support and solidarity to all the democracy defenders in Belarus, according to Belapan.
