Scott E. Fahlman, a research professor at Carnegie Mellon University, proposed using three punctuation marks – a colon, a hyphen and a bracket – to indicate “a text smile” typed on a computer on September 19, 1982.
History has preserved his original post at the CMU CS general board, where he suggested the use of smileys. The board was a prototype of modern forums and was the main means of communication between university employees.
