USA imposes sanctions on “Belarusneft”

"The United States is taking further action to increase pressure on Iran for its failure to meet its international obligations with regard to its nuclear program”, - informs the Department of State.

"As part of that strategy, the State Department is sanctioning Belarusneft, a state-owned Belarusian energy company", — is noted in the statement.

The Department has confirmed that Belarusneft signed a $500 million contract with the NaftIran Intertrade Company in 2007 for the development of the Jofeir oilfield in Iran. The law of 1996 requires that sanctions be imposed on companies that make certain investments over $20 million, informs BelaPAN.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner claimed at a briefing in Washington on March 29 that the sanctions limit the Belarusian company’s access to the U.S. market. “Even if they don't have any U.S. commercial activities at present, they will limit their options to operate in the U.S. in the future," - Toner said. According to him, the company will have to choose whether to run its business in the USA or in Iran.
