UNO includes access to Internet to list of basic human rights

This is stated in the new report of the United Nations Organization, published on June 8. The recent experience of revolutions in the Middle East, which revealed the importance of access to Internet, became one of the reasons of this UNO's statement.

The statement says that attempts to block Internet in countries of Middle East and North Africa were accompanied by oppression of basic rights of the population to conduct demonstrations and to have access to true information.

UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression Frank La Rue has noted that very often governments of authoritarian countries try to block access to the global network allegedly to struggle with terrorism. However, their real aim is not to allow opposition views to spread in the society, "Voice of America" informs.
