Presidential election takes place in Ireland today
7 candidates participate in the election, for the first time in the history of the Republic.
Among them there are three representatives of different parties (Michael D. Higgins, Gay Mitchell and Martin McGuinness) and independent candidates Seán Gallagher, Mary Davis, Dana Rosemary Scallon and David Norris.
The independent candidate, a 47-year-old Seán Gallagher is the favourite of the presidential pre-electoral race at the moment. According to the public opinion polls, he may count on support of 40% of voters, news agencies inform.
