Latvia's fears over Belarus KGB agents in diaspora

Several foreign special services, particularly the State Security Committee of Belarus (KGB), present in Latvia actively try to use the diaspora, reports delfi.lv quoting the SAB findings.

According to SAB, foreign intelligence services in Latvia operate to prevent the diaspora from picking the oppositional sentiments against the regime. In practical terms, it looks as follows: an intelligence officer, acting as a diplomat, mainatins regular contacts with all active diaspora leaders. He collects intelligence about the events where political debates and discussions may take place. He identifies the people who participate in potentially dangerous conversations.

The foreign intelligences in Latvia also try to engage the diaspora into actions that demonstrate loyalty to the regime back in their home country. For instance, intelligence officers were involved in drafting resolutions of several conferences that took place in Latvia. Foreign intelligence services also work with media, according to SAB report.
