Lahvinets: EP may urge Kavalenka to stop hunger-strike

Let us remind you that the European Parliament will debate on the situation in Belarus at a plenary session in Strasbourg today.  Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, is expected to address MEPs. A resolution that will be put to the vote on March 15 will be adopted after the debates.

Ales Lahvinets is not surprised at the European Parliament’s decision to discuss the situation in Belarus despite the previous plan to postpone it for two weeks. “The Belarusian issue is a hot issue for the united Europe now”, he says. Besides the diplomatic conflict and the presence of political prisoners, the political scientist reminded about Syarhei Kavalenka’s hunger-strike.

"The European Union cannot but react to the situation”, he thinks. Ales Lahvinets does not exclude that the European Parliament can adopt a resolution that would urge Kavalenka to stop the hunger-strike.

European Commissioner Štefan Füle urged Syarhei Kavalenka to stop the hunger-strike. “Belarus needs him and the other people struggling for human rights and democracy”, - he wrote on Twitter.
