German politicians and culture figures urge to release political prisoners

The appeal has been signed by the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Sigmar Gabriel,  the leaders of the "Greens" Claudia Roth and Cem Özdemir, the Chief of Staff of the German Cancellery Ronald Pofalla, the Commissioner for Human Rights Policy Markus Löning, actors Hannes Jaenicke and Judith Döker, a director Mo Asumang, Brandenbourg Minister-President Matthias Platzeck, the leader of the Young Christian Democrats Philipp Missfelder and the daughter of the arrested presidential candidate Mikalaj Statkevich Katja Statkevich,  Charter'97 reports

The authors of the appeal consider arrest as "serious violation of fundamental human rights" and demand to provide the right for fair court trial. They also express their concern with regard to the physical condition of the detainees. "This is an appeal in the name of freedom, democracy and human rights, which are universal and indivisible", - the authors of the appeal say to Lukashenka. "Release the prisoners!".
