Belarus holds parliamentary election today
September 23 is the main voting day.
The polling stations will work from 8 a.m.
till 8 p.m. today.
293 candidates compete for 110 places in the House of Representatives. 375
people had a candidate status before in total. However, the United Civil Party
and the Belarusian Popular Front party recalled their candidates a week before
the voting day and joined the boycott campaign. The opposition parties' demands
were to release all political prisoners and to include their representatives
into the election commissions, which wasn't done.
This
was the reason why six big opposition structures urged the people not to go to
the polling stations on September 23. Alongside with that, the opposition
announced there wouldn't be any protest actions on the voting day.
The observers recorded numerous violations during the early voting, which
lasted from September 18 till September 22. These are mostly manipulations with
the voters lists conducted by the election commissions' members, and coercion
to vote early. According to the official information, one in the five voters
voted early.
