Protestants stage mass prayers over new religion law

The Belarusian protestants on June 17 staged a mass prayer for the amendments to the country's laws on the freedom of consciousness and religion. Siargej Lukanin, the lawyer for the New Life church and the spokesman of the For Freedom of Consciousness campaign, told the European Radio for Belarus that prayers to protest the current legislation took place in over 500 Protestant churches.

The For Freedom of Consciousness public campaign was launched in Belarus on April 22.

The campaign activists gathered over 20,000 signatures, calling on the Constitutional Court to introduce amendments to the law on the freedom of consciousness and religious organizations.
