OSCE ODIHR criticizes parliamentary elections in Belarus

Despite of “some improvements”, the elections in Belarus did not correspond to OSCE standards. It is noted in the report of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights on the parliamentary elections that took place on September 28, 2008. Not a single representative of the opposition became a member of the House of Representatives. “Further efforts are required if Belarus really wants to conduct democratic elections corresponding to its OSCE commitments”, - is stressed in the report.

The fact that the existing election legislation does not allow “real political competition end equal attitude towards authorities’ candidates” is also mentioned.
