Opposition congress organizers write to president's office

The organizers of the Congress of Democratic Forces today filed an application with the Minsk City Hall, seeking persmission to stage the congress on May 26-27, Aliaksandr Bukhvostau, the chairman of the organizing committee today told reporters in Minsk. The organiziers also sent letters, requesting to provide decent premises in downtown Minsk for the event.

Besides, a letter has been filed with the Office of the President, seeking permission for the congress, because "such events cannot take place without the green light from the country's top leadership", Bukhvostau said.

The organizers asked to respond to their letter by May 16 so that they had enough time to prepare for the congress. Regional conferences for the congress have already taken place in the Minsk, Homel and Hrodna regions.

All the confrences had a necessary quorum. 21 delegates were additionally elected to attend the congress. It is expected that a total of 1000 delegates from across the country are to take part in the congress. Most of the participants of regional conferences -- 117 people -- voted in favor of electing several co-chairmen of the united pro-democracy forces. 112 people voted for electing a single leader of the opposition.

All of the major documents to be discussed at the congress -- "The Positive Alternative for Society", "The Small Constitution" and "The Economic Platform of the United Democratic Forces -- were approved by the regional conferences.
