New case started against Ukrainian pilot in Russia

The Russian authorities have started a new criminal case against Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko. She has been accused of crossing the border illegally, BBC reports. The new case was started on January 15, the pilot’s lawyer Mark Feigin said.

The pilot was captured by pro-Russia separatists in Lugansk and was transported to Russia last summer, Savchenko and other sources report. She was accused of being connected with the death of two Russian journalists there.

The pilot was directing the bombardment that killed the journalists and crossed the border like a refugee, the Russian authorities claim.

Savchenko was elected PACE member and the organization demands that Russia released the Ukrainian within 24 hours. However, Savchenko does not have to be released because she was elected PACE member after the arrest, Russia claims.
