New border area with Russia to "have no legal consequences"

After the President Decree, border areas in the regions bordering on Russia will be set up.

"Border area is not a frontier zone. It will not have legal consequences. This is only directed towards creation of conditions and use of forces and means of the border services in the interests of border security. It is also relevant for the inner border of the Union State," describes the new decree Alyaksandr Tishchanka, head of the State Border Committee press center.

Alyaksandr Tishchanka adds that an increase in the number of border guards near the Russian border is not on the agenda.

"Currently there are no border detachments. But sometimes, if necessary, mobile units carry out activities there. This measure will not increase the number of soldiers. We are talking about the conditions of units involved for border security in the area," said the representative of the Border Committee

The Russian Border Guard Service had yet to comment on the innovations of Belarus.

"So far, there have been no comments or official statements,"  says representative in the Border Service of Russia.

The introduction of the border area has no policy implied, it is a measure to bring the border in order, expressed his opinion expert Yury Shautsou

"On the Russian side there is an almost entire border infrastructure and from time to time it becomes relevant, when it is necessary to control the flow of goods from Belarus. Belarus is simply building this infrastructure later than Russia did. Over the last month there were taken a lot of decisions concerning the border."

Yury Shautsou links this measure to order restoration on the border with neighboring countries.

Border passport control at the border with Russia and Belarus has been virtually absent since 1997, when the treaties of the Union State were signed.
