More than 100 thousand BRB for tidy hair
Hot water will be turned off because of repair works even in maternity hospitals. The deputy head physician of Minsk Regional maternity hospital Tamara Alyaksandrava says that it is usually rather difficult for them, they have to boil water but it’s not the most important thing…
“The main thing is to have water. There is water. And we are heating it. There is special electroheat equipment in every department”.
Planned absence of hot water is regular practice in countries having a centralized heating system. It means that when one pipe is switched off the other ones stop functioning too.
The system is still used in Lithuania, Ukraine and Russia. At the same time, hot water in Poland (the country is also using the centralized heating system) can be switched off for only 2 hours per year. Our two weeks seem a long term in comparison with it.
People usually get to know that hot water is going to be switched off one or two days before it happens. The head of Minsk communal heat systems control unit Ina Hrakovich says that housing and communal services organizations should inform about it much earlier:
“People should be informed at least 11 days before repair works start. The works should not last more than 14 days. We have never violated the rule. We even turned hot water on earlier”.
But even after such periods of repair works lasting from May till August some faults can be found in the country’s heating system. 283 faults have been discovered during six months. It is about 2 faults per day. So it turns into a year of repair works. Why does it happen? Is it the result of haste or something else? Ina Hrakovich says:
“First of all, pipes are pipes. They have their term of exploitation. You see? People find faults and think we missed them during repair works. But there were no faults then! They may have appeared during the exploitation”.
Ina Hrakovich does not think it is necessary to shorten the term of repair works. She thinks it is already the minimal term that can be afforded. But, for example, they switch hot water off for only 3 days in Lithuania. There is a boiler-room for every few houses there.
It is impossible to do the same thing here, thinks the head manager of Minsk communal heating systems Raman Palunchanka. It will require 1000 euro from every family to build a boiler-room for 60 flats. And it will be necessary to pay for the maintenance.
The European Radio for Belarus asked a plumber Dzyanis Zhauryd how the absence of hot water influenced sanitary engineering:
“It will be necessary to clean mixers because the water is usually untidy after repair works. You can even see rusty water. So it needs to be done so that you wouldn’t have any holes in the pipe and the packing in the mixer would not leak”.
So the price of two weeks without hot water is not that high. You can go the hairdresser's. ERB asked is it is possible to have your hair washed in the “Style” hairdressing saloon:
“Of course, we will do it. It will cost about 6-8 thousand BRB. We do not have a special service like that; I have just counted it according to the price of some other services”.
This price is for short hair. Now you can count how much you might spend at the hairdresser’s during the period of absence of hot water. It will cost about 100 thousand BRB if you need to wash your hair every day. And think of where you could go to brush your teeth…
