Mahilyou social democrat fined for Br4.5 million

Deputy head of the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party Hramada Ihar Barysau has been fined for 30 base amounts (4.5 million Belarusian roubles) for distributing the unregistered newspaper Nash Mahilyou and the bulletin Social Democrat. Mahilyou District Court made the decision on August 12. Driving inspectors stopped Barysau’s car on the night of July 16. According to them, an act of hooliganism had been committed in that car in Byalynichy. They ordered the activist to head for the district police office. The car was searched and all the printed editions were confiscated – 11800 copies of newspapers. Ihar Barysau is going to appeal the court’s decision and is even planning to complain to the UN Human Rights Committee if necessary.
