Lukashenka offers “Gazprom” free gas transit through Belarus

Alyaksandr Lukashenka has suggested that Russia should give up the idea of building a new pipe-line Nord Stream in favour of another pipe-line Yamal-Europa that crosses Belarus. The Belarusian President promised to free Russia from taxes for gas transit through Belarus for five years. The “Kommersant” newspaper informs about it.

Lukashenka thinks that Russia will be losing 2 billion dollars every year if oil is pumped past Belarus. If Russia builds one more branch of the pipe-line the transit will save the country 1.46 billion dollars.

The construction was planned to start in 2008 but the project of the second branch has not been included in the next year’s investment programme.
