Former MP candidate ordered to refund campaign money to state

Homel's Central District Court has ordered Kanstantsin Zhukouski, a former parliamentary candidate, to refund Br1,750,000 ($850), allocated for his campaign, to the Belarusian state.
Zhukouski was running in a Buda-Kashalyova constituency and withdrew from the race three days before the election. The hearing had originally been scheduled for November 17 but was postponed after Zhukouski refused to be questioned in the Russian language.

During the hearing on November 20, a translator was taking part. The former candidate rejected plaintiff's demands, saying he has a good exuse to withdraw from the elections.

According to the former candidate, members of his nomination group and he were routinely harassed or fired from work. Having realised there would be no fair polls, he withdrew from the race when the campaign money allocated by the state had already been spent.
