European Union refuses from flag and anthem

A new project of the European Constitution, adopted by the 27 member-states, does not mention any flag or anthem. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel who presided at the summit noted: “We refused from anything that could remind of EU as a state, in particular, from a flag and an anthem”.
Ms. Merkel added: “But I think we will still use the flag and the anthem will still be played”. State symbols were provided for in the previous project of the Constitution that was not ratified after the refusal of France and Holland in 2005. The new European project will come into power in 2009.
