EU condemns Russia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia

The European Union has condemned decisively Russia's decision to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, according to the statement issued by France which currently holds the EU presidency on August 26.
The statement stressed that Russia's decision "contradicts the principles of Georgia's independence and territorial integrity, recognized in the UN Charter, the final act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council".

The European Union has called for a political solution of the conflict, reports Belapan.
