Election Day in Belarus

October 11 is Election Day during the presidential elections in Belarus.

Under the Belarusian electoral laws, a citizen of Belarus, not younger than 35 years old, can be elected as president. The person must enjoy the right to vote and live in the country for not less than ten years before the election. People with convictions are not eligible for running for presidency.

Four candidates have stayed in the race — Siarhei Haidukevich, Tacciana Karatkevich, Aliaksandr Lukashenka, Mikalai Ulakhovich.

Early voting took place in Belarus begining from October 6. According to Central Election Commission, over 36% of voters have already cast their ballots. Meanwhile, independent observers report violations at polling stations - in most cases, exaggeration of the turnout.

On Election Day of October 11, polling stations will be open from 0800 till 2000 Belarus time.

Preliminary results of the polls are expected to be announced in the night of October 12.
