Ecologist Herasimenka: NPP construction should be a ballot question

Yauhen Herasimenka, Belarusian Party of the Greens:  “The NPP construction should be a ballot question. We do not have the specialists needed for it. The very maintenance of the NPP in Belarus will be unprofitable. It is a lot of money. The liquidation of the NPP and the storage of its waste also cost a lot”.

Euroradio: Are NPPs dangerous if they work normally?

Herasimenka: “New and old NPPs are prone to disasters. There are disasters even at the world’s model NPPs everyday – they are classified as earthquakes and there is a certain scale for it. Of course, if the disaster involves waste emission into the atmosphere and the ocean like at “Fukushima” – it is a collapse everyone gets to know about. However, if one employee gets exposed to rays, it is likely to be concealed. The dangerous attributes of such plants remain but they may be covered differently”.

Euroradio: Why is Belarus ready to invest so much money in the NPP?

Herasimenka: “I do not know why. I also think that it is strange because renewable energy sources allow a much cheaper construction and do not require such a big money infusion”.
