Deepest oil well in Belarus to be drilled near Rechytsa

Belarus plans to drill the deepest oil well in this country by late 2008 in the Rechytsa district, Homel region, Yarasalu Hrybik, the chief gas and oil geologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection told Belapan news agency.
The 5.7km-deep well will be drilled on hopes of finding a new oilfield as well as gas or condensate which have not yet been found in Belarus.

Hrybik noted that drilling would cost over Br10 billion. If oil is eventually found there, it will be more expensive than the oil currently drilled from Belarusian fields 2-3km deep. The specialist said that if they fail to find oil, gas or condensate, the well will need to be destroyed.
