City to remove about 500 private kiosks from Minsk

The Minsk authorities plan to clear the city of about 500 private kiosks selling consumer goods and cigarettes before December 10.

"There will be no kiosks in the city except for the Belsayuzdruk [retail newspaper] chain," an official with the Kastrychnitski district administration told Euroradio.

Business owners say that the move is illegal. "The decision has not even been subjected to mandatory legal examination by experts of the Ministry of Justice," said Anatol Shumchanka, leader of the Perspektyva association of small business owners, stressing that it affects millions of people.

Business owner Uladzimir says he does not know what he will do after his kiosk is removed. The city's decision leaves him without work.

"The authorities did not produce the decision to remove kiosks, officials told owners about it," Uladzimir said. "A kiosk costs between $7,000 and $10,000. But now we do not know what to do with it, let alone what to do for living. Late last year, the authorities told us to replace old kiosks with new ones, saying that we would be allowed to operate."
