Children account for 20 per cent of Belarus population

The data, timed with the International Children's Day on June 1, has been released by the National Statistics Committee of Belarus.


76.5 per cent of all children live in the cities or townships; 23.5 per cent live in rural areas. 115.9 thousand children were born last year. The birthrate has increased from 9.4 per 1000 in 2005 up to 12.2 in 2012.



Firstborns accounted for a half of newly born children last year. There is an increase in the number of children born into registered marriage.



Belarus enjoys a low baby and children mortality rate. For instance, the mortality rate was 3.4 per 1000 against 7.1 in 2005.
