Chernobyl liquidator becomes Latvian President

The Seim of Latvia has elected Valdzis Zatlers seventh President after a secret vote today. 58 deputies voted pro while 40 voted contra. 39 votes were given to the other candidate Aivar Endzinsh while 59 parliamentarians voted against him.
Non-party Zatlers was born in 1955, he is married with three children. He graduated from Riga Medical Institute and has been the head physician of the Hospital of traumatic surgery and orthopaedy since 1994.

He started his career as a traumatologist and orthopedist and became head of the department of traumatology of Riga Hospital #2. Zatlers participated in the liquidation of the consequences of Chernobyl disaster in 1986. He was a member of the Popular Front of Latvia.
