Captain of Costa Concordia imprisoned for 16 years

Captain of the cruise ship Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino has been returned guilty of the shipwreck that resulted in people’s death and has been imprisoned for 16 years, Reuters reports.

The prosecutor demanded to imprison Schettino for 26 years and 3 months for manslaughter. The ex-captain sobbed during his speech in court.

“I died together with the 32 shipwreck victims,” —Schettino claimed and added that he was being made a scapegoat.

Schettino accidentally made the cruise ship hit underwater rocks in January 2012. When he understood that the ship was doomed, he fled without ordering evacuation, investigators say.
