Cable TV operators encouraged to develop networks in central Minsk

The Minsk city authorities have developed a resolution to establish a commission to regulate the development of cable television networks in the Belarusian capital, Viktar Bychkou, the director of the Minsk Television Information Networks company said on June 20. He said that the commission aims to shape technical policy in order to define the prospects for the development of information and telecommunication infrastructure in Minsk and to regulate the opration of the capital's cable TV operators.

Viktar Bychkou said that all of the cable TV operators in Minsk (10) would tend to develop their networks in new housing projects where houses are localted in close proximity. This would not require a lot of investments. But, the central districts of the city basically remained with the cable TV systems.

"There are simple antennas for airway reception on the roofs of the fouses. In those apartments (over 60,000 in Minsk), the population has the opportunity to watch three channel only," he said.

The commmission is set to encourage the development of cable networks in all of the city's districts. The quality control will also be strengthened, according to Belta.
