Belarus pays another $66mn to Gazprom

Belarus has paid another installment of $66 million to Gazprom, Belarus's Energy Ministry said today. The money were transferred to the Russian gas giant on August 7, reports Interfax. The Energy Ministry promised that the outstanding payments to cover the debt for the Russian gas would be effected in the morning of August 8.


Belarus owes Gazprom a total of $456 million for has supplies from January through June 2007. When Gazprom threatened to cut gas supplies by 45 percent on August 3, Alexander Lukashenka said that the money would be transferred to the Russian company. However, only $190 million were wired to Moscow on August 3.

The Minsk-based ONT TV reported on August 6 that the Russian company had received the payment of another installment of over $110 million. After the third installment, Belarus still owes Gazprom around $90 million and has the coming Friday deadline to clear off its gas bills in full.
