Belarus ambassador in Argentina suspected of fraud

Law-enforcement agencies in Argentina on January 24 ordered for an investigation against top diplomats from several countries in a criminal case associated with tax evasion during the import of cars.

Naviny.by reports that ambassadors from 14 countries, including Belarus, Bolivia, Nigeria, Uruguay, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, Chile and Ecuador, as well as the consuls from numerous countries.

The Argentinian authorities suspect that the diplomats have imported 98 cars into the country without paying customs duties.

An Argentinian Foreign Ministry official admitted that the diplomats enjoy immunity and cannot be charged. But if they are proved to have violated the laws, they could be expelled from the country.

It is worth noting that the Belarusian Ambassador in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay Vadzim Lazerka was sacked from this post by Alexander Lukashenka on January 3, 2008.
