Angela Merkel: Expansion of European Union is possible

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel who is now presiding in the EU claims that the adoption of the project of the European Constitution will make it possible to expand the European Union. The German Chancellor noted that, according to the Nice Treaty, the maximum number of EU member-states is 27.
Answering questions about the possibility of accepting Macedonia in the EU Ms. Merkel noted that it depended on the readiness of Macedonia to start the necessary reforms. The EU Council will summon a commission on changing the main EU treaties: the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 and the Rome Treaty of 1957. It is planned to introduce changes in the European Parliament and European Commission, to strengthen the role of the head of the European Commission, to turn the EU Council into an institution, to create the post of the President of the EU and change the system of the 6-months presidency of EU ministers.
