Anatol Lyabedzka to stand trial today

Сёння пройдзе суд над Анатолем Лябедзькам

UCP leader Anatol Lyabedzka’s administrative case will be considered in Minsk Central District Court today. The politician is accused of participation in an action in memory of victim of Stalin’s repressions near KGB headquarters in Minsk.

Lyabedzka had to stand trial on November 12 but he asked to postpone the hearing because he had to meet Lithuanian Minister for Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius on that day. That is why the hearing was postponed until November 20.

The action was held on the evening of October 29. About a hundred people including well-known opposition politicians and civil activists took part in it. People lit candles and put them on the KGB threshold. Some people formed a line along Independence Avenue.

The police wrote down the names of all the action participants but did not detain anyone on that day.

Anatol Lyabedzka has taken part in a number of unauthorized actions including the picket against the deployment of a Russian military air base in Belarus in the centre of Minsk this year. He and other opposition leaders were fined for huge sums several times.
