Ambassador: EU does not compete with Russia for Belarus

The European Union does not compete with Russia, trying to woo Belarus away from its sphere of influence, outgoing British Ambassador Nigel Gould-Davies said at a farewell news conference in Minsk on September 1.

The ambassador said that it is a flawed way of thinking. The EU is a 21st century institution, not a 19th century state, Interfax quoted him as saying.

He added that closer ties with the EU would help Belarus strengthen its independence.
